Certified Orthoptist | Pediatric & Adult Strabismus

About Elizabeth Gayeski, CO

Elizabeth Gayeski, CO is a Certified Orthoptist at Children’s Eye Care of Michigan with extensive experience evaluating children and adults with strabismus (eye misalignment), amblyopia (lazy eye), and diplopia (double vision).

Elizabeth works closely with our pediatric ophthalmologists and adult strabismus specialists, performing specialized testing of vision, eye alignment, eye movements, and binocular vision. Her detailed measurements provide important clinical information physicians use in diagnosing and managing strabismus and other disorders affecting how the eyes work together.

Elizabeth earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan and went on to complete her postgraduate orthoptic training at the University of Michigan. In 2009, she successfully completed the written and oral board examinations to become a Certified Orthoptist through the American Orthoptic Council.

Orthoptic Expertise

  • Pediatric Strabismus Testing — specialized measurement of eye alignment and eye movements in infants, children, and adolescents
  • Adult Strabismus Testing — detailed sensorimotor testing for adults with eye misalignment and double vision
  • Amblyopia (Lazy Eye) Testing & Follow-Up — visual acuity and alignment testing as part of physician-directed care
  • Sensorimotor Examinations — detailed measurements of ocular alignment, motility, and binocular function
  • Infant & Pediatric Vision Testing — age-appropriate methods for measuring vision in babies and young children
  • Patient & Parent Education — helping patients and families understand testing and physician-directed treatment plans

The Role of an Orthoptist

Certified Orthoptists are highly trained eye care professionals who specialize in the evaluation of eye alignment, eye movements, and binocular vision. At Children’s Eye Care, our orthoptists work closely with pediatric ophthalmologists and adult strabismus specialists, performing specialized testing that helps physicians diagnose and manage conditions such as strabismus (eye misalignment) and amblyopia (lazy eye).

Orthoptists are especially skilled at evaluating infants and young children, using age-appropriate techniques to measure vision and eye alignment even when a child is too young to read an eye chart or describe what they see.

This collaborative approach is an important part of the specialized pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus care provided at Children’s Eye Care.

Experience & Orthoptic Training

After earning her bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan, Elizabeth continued her education at the University of Michigan through specialized postgraduate training in orthoptics.

Her clinical orthoptic training focused on the evaluation of disorders of the visual system, particularly binocular vision, eye alignment, and eye movements, and prepared her to perform specialized examinations for children and adults with strabismus, amblyopia, and double vision.

In 2009, Elizabeth successfully completed the written and oral board examinations required for certification as an orthoptist through the American Orthoptic Council.

Throughout her career, Elizabeth has worked with patients of different ages and abilities. Her experience evaluating young children is particularly valuable in pediatric ophthalmology, where obtaining accurate vision and alignment measurements often requires patience, flexibility, and specialized testing techniques.

The aftermath of Thyroid eye disease left my inferior rectus muscle in my right eye so stiff, it made me look cockeyed. My self esteem was shot. No one would even look at me. I was so scared to get surgery. I keep putting it off.
