About Dr. Gianfermi
Elena Gianfermi, MD is a board-certified, fellowship-trained pediatric ophthalmologist with expertise in pediatric cataracts, strabismus, and eyelid conditions. She also specializes in the evaluation and treatment of adult strabismus (eye misalignment).
Dr. Gianfermi joined Children’s Eye Care in 2011. In addition to patient care and surgery, she is actively involved in clinical research, medical education, and national professional education in pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus.
Areas of Clinical Expertise
- Pediatric Cataracts – diagnosis, surgical management, and long-term follow-up
- Pediatric Strabismus (Eye Misalignment) – evaluation and medical or surgical treatment of eye misalignment in children
- Adult Strabismus – evaluation and surgical treatment of eye misalignment in adults, including double vision related to strabismus
- Pediatric Eyelid Conditions – evaluation and treatment of eyelid conditions in children, including those requiring surgery
Academic Leadership & Teaching
Dr. Gianfermi is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at Wayne State University School of Medicine and a staff physician in the Department of Ophthalmology at Children’s Hospital of Michigan.
Education has been an important part of her career. She has presented locally and nationally on pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus and has participated in the education and mentorship of physicians in training.
Research & Clinical Trials
Dr. Gianfermi has participated as an investigator in national clinical research through the Pediatric Eye Disease Investigator Group (PEDIG). Her research experience includes studies of pediatric and adult strabismus, amblyopia, pediatric optic neuritis, and pediatric uveitis.
She has contributed to peer-reviewed research published in journals including Ophthalmology, JAMA Ophthalmology, and the Journal of AAPOS. Her published work includes research in strabismus and other pediatric eye conditions.
Professional Leadership & Recognition
Dr. Gianfermi is actively involved in the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (AAPOS) and has served on its Professional Education Committee since 2017. She is also a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and Michigan Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons.
She has been recognized as a Top Doctor by Hour Detroit for many years. Her academic honors also include election to the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society and the Barsky Research Award during her ophthalmology training at Kresge Eye Institute.
Education & Advanced Training
Dr. Gianfermi completed her Pediatric Ophthalmology Fellowship at Children’s Hospital of Michigan after completing her ophthalmology residency at Kresge Eye Institute.
She earned her medical degree from Wayne State University School of Medicine, where she received numerous academic honors and was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society.
Before medical school, Dr. Gianfermi earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from the University of Michigan.
