About Dr. Ismail
Amanda Ismail, MD is a board-certified, fellowship-trained pediatric ophthalmologist and adult strabismus surgeon at Children’s Eye Care. Her clinical expertise includes pediatric glaucoma, pediatric cataracts, strabismus, pediatric uveitis, and retinopathy of prematurity (ROP).
Dr. Ismail provides both pediatric and adult strabismus care, including the evaluation and surgical treatment of complex eye misalignment and double vision in adults. She completed specialized fellowship training in Pediatric Ophthalmology and Adult Strabismus at Children’s Hospital of Michigan and Children’s Eye Care before joining the practice in 2021.
In addition to patient care and surgery, Dr. Ismail is actively involved in clinical research and the education of ophthalmology residents and future physicians.

Academic Teaching & Education
Dr. Ismail serves on the faculty of Wayne State University School of Medicine/Kresge Eye Institute and Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine.
She is actively involved in ophthalmology resident education, teaching pediatric ophthalmology through lectures, case discussions, and examination preparation. Her teaching has covered topics including amblyopia, nystagmus, optic nerve abnormalities, orbital disorders, pediatric cataracts, and other pediatric eye conditions.
Dr. Ismail also regularly lectures on pediatric and adult ophthalmic conditions. Recent presentations have included pediatric ocular trauma, complex strabismus, adult double vision, and thyroid eye disease-related diplopia.
Research & Publications
Dr. Ismail is involved in clinical research through the Pediatric Eye Disease Investigator Group (PEDIG) and currently serves as an investigator in its national study of uveitis in children.
Her research interests have also included pediatric glaucoma, strabismus, and pediatric neuro-ophthalmic conditions. She is the lead author of published research examining long-term outcomes of Ahmed glaucoma drainage device procedures in children with glaucoma and has contributed to research on visual symptoms in children.
Dr. Ismail has presented research and clinical cases at national meetings, including the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (AAPOS) and Women in Ophthalmology.
Professional Involvement
Dr. Ismail is a member of the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, American Academy of Ophthalmology, and Michigan Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons.
Her professional involvement began during residency, when she represented ophthalmology as an Advocacy Ambassador at the American Academy of Ophthalmology Mid-Year Forum in Washington, D.C., participating in advocacy and leadership activities related to ophthalmology and medicine.
Education & Advanced Training
Dr. Ismail completed a fellowship in Pediatric Ophthalmology and Adult Strabismus at Children’s Hospital of Michigan and Children’s Eye Care.
She completed her ophthalmology residency at Kresge Eye Institute at Wayne State University School of Medicine and earned her medical degree from Wayne State University School of Medicine.
Dr. Ismail earned her undergraduate degree in Biology from the University of Michigan-Dearborn, graduating summa cum laude.
