About Dr. Apkarian
Alexandra Apkarian, MD is a board-certified, fellowship-trained pediatric ophthalmologist with expertise in pediatric and adult strabismus (eye misalignment), double vision, and a broad range of childhood eye conditions.
Dr. Apkarian completed specialized fellowship training in Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus at the University of Michigan W.K. Kellogg Eye Center and joined Children’s Eye Care in 2014. She provides both pediatric and adult strabismus care, including surgical treatment of eye misalignment and double vision.
In addition to caring for patients and performing surgery, Dr. Apkarian is involved in medical education and has taught ophthalmology residents on strabismus and a broad range of pediatric eye conditions.

- Pediatric Strabismus (Eye Misalignment) – evaluation and medical or surgical treatment of eye misalignment in children
- Adult Strabismus & Double Vision – evaluation and surgical treatment of eye misalignment and related double vision in adults

Academic Teaching
Dr. Apkarian has been extensively involved in ophthalmology education. She holds an academic appointment at Wayne State University and has taught ophthalmology residents through lectures, clinical education, and board-review programs.
Her teaching has covered strabismus, pediatric neuro-ophthalmology, pediatric eyelid disorders, tear drainage conditions and thyroid eye disease. She has also taught pediatric ophthalmology through ophthalmology board and OKAP review programs.
In 2024, Dr. Apkarian presented a continuing medical education program through Children’s Hospital of Michigan focused on common pediatric eye surgeries.
Research & Publications
Dr. Apkarian has contributed to research in pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus. Her published work includes research examining surgical outcomes in childhood esotropia and the relationship between gestational age, birth weight, and the development of strabismus in premature infants.
Her academic work has also included neuro-ophthalmic conditions affecting vision and eye movements, as well as research involving amblyopia and other pediatric visual conditions. She has presented clinical and research work at national ophthalmology meetings.
Education & Advanced Training
Dr. Apkarian completed her Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus Fellowship at the University of Michigan W.K. Kellogg Eye Center, following her ophthalmology residency at the University of Michigan.
She earned her medical degree from the University of Michigan Medical School, where she was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha and received the Dean’s Commendation for Excellence in Clinical Skills and the Art of Medicine.
Dr. Apkarian earned her undergraduate degree in Comparative Study of Religion from Harvard College, graduating magna cum laude.
