About Dr. Baker


Dr. Baker served as Chief of Ophthalmology at Children’s Hospital of Michigan from 1985 to 2004. He then served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Children’s Hospital of Michigan from 2004 to 2010 and continues as a member of the Board of Trustees. Since 2011, he has been a member of the Children’s Hospital of Michigan Foundation Board of Trustees, serving as Board Chairman in 2011. He is Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at Wayne State University School of Medicine.

Dr. Baker has spoken all over North America, in many foreign countries and has delivered several named lectures. Dr. Baker’s clinical and research interests encompass pediatric cataracts, strabismus and retinopathy of prematurity and include participation in National Institute of Health/ National Eye Institute sponsored research trials. He has published 49 peer reviewed manuscripts, been part of 74 collaborative study manuscript publications and has delivered several named lectures including the Costenbader, Parks and Scobee Lectures. He was Treasurer of the Children’s Eye Foundation, Past-president of the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus and a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, Association for Research in Strabismus, European Strabismological Association, International Strabismus Association, Michigan Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons, American Medical Association, Michigan State Medical Society and Wayne County Medical Society.

Dr. Baker has been named in The Best Doctors in America, the Best Doctors in the Midwest and Top Docs in Hour Detroit. In 2016, he was honored to be given The Marshall Parks Silver Medalist award, by the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, for his dedication to teaching, research and leadership that enhanced pediatric ophthalmology. Dr. Baker’s former residents and fellows have regarded him an outstanding teacher of pediatric ophthalmology, and his exemplary career accomplishments speak to his excellent, well-deserved national reputation in pediatric ophthalmology. For that, Kresge Eye Institute created the John D. Baker, MD Lectureship in Pediatric Ophthalmology to honor his lifelong dedication to teaching and enhancing pediatric ophthalmology.

Very complete exam by both the initial attending and by Dr Bohra. Having double vision for upwards of 6-7 years and little complete resolution until now was truly difficult. Now I feel much resolution to the problem. Wonderful!

Dr. Bohra is more than just a Doctor. She actually cares about her patients. I had a preemie 23 weekend he was almost blind. She preformed surgery did excellent wasn’t satisfied sent us to the best Doctor in the world. My son is 20/30 now when he could have been blind. I’m grateful for her and her practice. She is training her staff to follow in her footsteps. She is just a awesome human being!
